In what could be considered somewhat of an upset, A Piece Of Strange barely edged out both Fishscale and The Great Migration to take the 2006 AOTY title. I hadn't heard A Piece Of Strange in a few years prior to the voting. Over last couple days when i saw it had a legit shot to win i gave it a few spins. It really is a complete and cohesive album. The Gates in particular is such a haunting and somber song but beautiful in it's own right. Although i was hoping for The Great Migration to take the victory, it's a well deserved win for CunninLynguists and I'm happy this won over Fishscale.

Thanks again to everybody that voted. The next year we're doing is 2008. Nomination thread goes up Thursday morning.

Here's the Top 10 from the final round...

CunninLynguists – A Piece Of Strange – 61
Ghostface Killah - Fishscale – 57
Bronze Nazareth – The Great Migration – 56
J Dilla - Donuts – 50
Nas – Hip Hop Is Dead – 28
Jedi Mind Tricks – Servants In Heaven, Kings In Hell – 27
Clipse - Hell Hath No Fury – 26
J-Zone and Celph Titled - Boss Hog Barbarians – 25
The Roots – Game Theory – 24
Lupe Fiasco - Food & Liquor – 23
Celph Titled - The Gatalog – 23

*There's 11 albums listed as Food & Liquor and The Gatalog both had 23 points.

After the first day and a half both Fishscale and Donuts were a decent amount ahead of all other albums. Both A Piece Of Strange and especially The Great Migration made up a lot of ground over the last day or so.

i don't remember what all of the previous winners were, but i think this is the first year so far where one of my top 2 albums won. a piece of strange is damn near perfect imo, and probably my favorite cunninlynguists album. it's such a cohesive and well put together concept album, some great storytelling and and the production on here is incredible. i'm really glad this won.

I predicted this. I stated before that this album bores the hell out of me. I'm willing to give it another shot. Someone want to enlighten me as to what the concept is? I recall reading it is like an Adam and Eve coming of age type story. I was never able to catch it.

here's a site that explains the concept if you're really that interested, but basically it's about the internal struggle of good vs evil within a person (the main character/protagonist played by deacon) and his path to and from sin, with the other rappers on the album playing different characters. really the concept is loose enough that i can't blame someone for not picking up on it especially if they don't care for the music in the first place. i'd say oneirology is the stronger concept album as a whole but musically i think i like a piece of strange just a little bit more.

Interesting results. Never really liked the content matter of this album, and Kno's production was way more appealing to me on their debut. The choruses also came pretty soft, and that didn't age well for me either

I think this is the first time one of my top picks won too- though I like Onierology even more, and knew the idea of the concept, but never really figured out the whole story on APOS.

I slept on that Bronze Nazareth, I gotta peep that I guess- I had really given up on most Wu-related stuff other than Priest and Ghost probably long before '06.

The voting disparity between the top four albums and the rest is pretty wide.

I too wasn't aware of a concept prior to listening originally as well as revisiting it. Pretty interesting.

Surprised that nas album made the final round. Only has a handful of good tracks.

Good win for CL, i rate this album highly. The rappers are always a bit on the average side but they held there own ok here and kno is always on point. Probably the most underrated producer in hip hop. Really wish he branched out more.

One of the few artist on here who are universally loved.

I wouldn't say universally loved but they've been an underground staple for the last 15 years. Probably about 75% of the heads on here fuck with them. Definitely one of the more consistent groups too. One of the better voting results in recent memory was SJV3 beating out Pinata by one or two points in 2014 lulz.

What's even more impressive about this win is they didn't even get one vote from the first five people that voted in the final round.

Shit i didn't even know what cover that was. I plead ignorance since 2007 was the only year where i didn't handle the voting tally duties.

Updated...

DOOM - 4
Nas - 3
El-P - 2
Brother Ali - 2

Not giving El-P the Cold Vein vote. Wouldn't be surprised if DOOM has two albums in the Top 5 of 2004. He'll definitely have one.

Either that or A Long Hot Summer. Even A Long Hot Summer would be a surprise but with Ace running away with the 2001 vote i could see him having a shot. As far as 2008 goes, nothing really stands above the rest so should be a close vote again.

great migration >>>>>> a geek is strange

huge disapointement/annoyance that migration didnt take it. would have been a better look for the forum and the process.

like i keep saying. great process and its appreciated but it keeps revealing that the majority on here (maybe just over 50%) dont hear a lot and/or have soft taste.

seriously tho! 3 actual weak ass soft nas albums in the top 5's so far, a jay z, gangstarrs weakest album, an instrumental album, the super hit and miss shitscale album and a few other average ass albums. my point proven.

^haha- i got that all out. let me clarify my album complaints: jay-z album is o.k. but not ughh and some cheese on it, those 3 nas albums are pretty weak, gangstarr one is half dope(2nd half)-has some terrible beats and isnt top 5 worthy, fishscale is over rated (like ghost is)and many weak moments not just including the old dilla beats he used. and including instrumental albums ( and i've done it too when i had nothing else to vote for) dosnt make sense.

whats the concept on oneirology tip?

not sure if i ever caught that.

NOW A PIECE OF STRANGE! this one was obvious from the start although i guess i never really looked at deacon as the main character for some reason, probably cuz natti was heavily present dope throughout the album, but i got the basic good and evil concept. .

surprised some of ya'll cant give this album its just dues. its a sounthern underground classic.

no mask you sound bitter that one of your favs never wins. dont mean our tastes are soft, we like them albums too. just not as much as this. get over it. kno has been one of the most underrated producers for years now. how else would strange jounrney (a cl compilation) edge out every album in a aoty competition? deacon and natti are no slouch either, check the whole catalog.

at tippi - thats cool i'll relisten to that with the concept in mind.

and i wasnt calling you out tip. i really never fact checked how the whole concept for apos was supposed to be or anything. i kinda just made my own conclusion off of what i heard on there. the concept was always pretty easy to notice with the art and all, plus how the dude meets a lady of a different color falls in love and has the daughter with her then shit kinda goes down hill from there. i just loved the whole album. love the momentum the album builds (so key for a great album to do that imo).

track 4

right into

^^^^these are my 2 favorite tracks even though everything toward the end is great, too.

oh yeah and this

^^i climax when that beat drops everytime lol

nah you were right, i literally thought that's what i had typed lol. deacon plays more than one role on the album though, he's supposed to be saint peter on "the gates"

i love the role tonedeff plays on the album, as the father of the protagonists love interest, standing before the gates of heaven, where he's trying to convince himself and saint peter that he's not racist because he's a firefighter that saves lives regardless of race, but he's got ulterior motives of being famous and doesn't actually care about the people he's saving. he just wants the recognition. he's against his daughter having a mixed race kid. that all started when his wife passed away and he had come to the conclusion that life would have been easier if he had married a white woman instead. so he can't stand to see his daughter make the same "mistake" he did, and this further fuels his racism. then he's sent "to fight fires for eternity" in hell, and i love the way that leads into damnation and hellfire.

[Deacon]
A mixed raced queen, that was your thoughts about her mama
Up yonder went her soul, your hate growed from ponders
On life, being less trife with a white wife
So any instance of y'alls differences it was slice-slice

[Tonedeff]
Oh my, it's not her race, my daughter's love flies blind
I couldn't take her making the same mistakes that crushed my life
I'm dumbstruck by these baseless allegations
I've saved too many lives of all creeds
For you to paint me as a racist
I've endangered my own safety to save babies from blazes
Black, white, latino, even asian on occasion

[Deacon]
But why so?

[Tonedeff]
How dare you question my motivation!

[Deacon]
No need to second guess, your only aim was to be famous
Lord knows, you've left behind scorched souls
Black children left chilling, later found burnt whole
So sadly, your glory's to come urgently
Sentenced to fight fires for eternity

depends on how big the book is, but if it's like 900+ pages you should either be storing it on it's side, or you put it on a shelf vertically and cut up pieces of cardboard to stick under the pageblock so gravity doesn't pull the pages down over time and damage the spine.

it's the kamandi omnibus. i think i remember one of you posting a video of some guy showing how to preserve them, where you have to open the book up and start pressing on the pages or some crazy voodoo shit like that.
