przm passed away this sunday afternoon. since his birth, he had a heart condition that made him very tired, weak, and unmotivated at times but he was still able to bless yall with some bangers.
przm produced...
camu tao - hold the floor
copywrite - ten times
sa smash - smash tv and a few others on the lp
illogic - off the clock ep
spitball was the crew he established when he came here to columbus. he also started a hiphop night here(bernies) that ran for 6 consecutive years and brought cats from akrobatik, c rayz, breeze evahflowin, rack lo and thirstin howl, supastition, and many others.
przm recorded material with copywrite and jakki in '99-'01that was called "foulmouf dux" that never seen the light of day but some tracks are floating around columbus and maybe i can put some up.
spread the word. przm will be missed by many.

That is a damn shame. Though I haven't heard anything recently by him, that is still sad, and a loss none the less. He did produce some real tight shit. I didn't know he was from the CO.

Total Posts: 934 Member Since: 2005 Location: Manhattan | posted Monday, June 11, 2007 4:29:41 PM For the unfamiliar, here's some of DJ PRZM's work:
1) Camu Tao - "Hold the Floor" http://www.sendspace.com/file/z9jc8c From "Definitive Jux Presents II" (2002)
One of the biggest singles in Definitive Jux's short history, "Hold the Floor" walks the line of experimentation and traditional boom-bap, resulting in a eerily crawling production that just fucking knocks. The first solo single from CamuTao (MHz, SA Smash), Przm's looming backdrops allows Tao's personality to match his lyrical ability Przm's beat was also used as fellow midwesterner Slug's entrance music during Atmosphere's "Seven's Travels" tour, and was subsequently rhymed over on the Mr. Dibbs/Atmosphere release "Sad Clown Bad Dub 7" on the track "Jackin' Your Fleece."
2) Illogic - "Off the Clock" http://www.sendspace.com/file/jkagwc From "Off the Clock EP" (2004)
Most of Orphanage member and Columbus native Illogic's work falls into the same classicification as Saafir and Aesop Rock's vivid abstract imagery with a stream-of-consciousness delivery. However, on their (VERY) limited edition joint 2004 EP "Off the Clock," Przm's guidance and chopped funk samples allow Illogic to remain focused and direct in his most accessible release to date. The opener "Off the Clock" sets the pace with a humorous and understandible guide to audience ettiquete. I had the opportunity to see Illogic and Przm perform this live together during Eyedea and Abilities' 2004 tour, and I honestly wish it could be performed at the beginning of every concert everywhere forever and ever amen.
3) Jakki Da Motamouth - "I'm Tryin" http://www.sendspace.com/file/rfipl0 From "Built to Last" (2003)
4) Copywrite - "(O.H.) Ten Times" (12" Mix) http://www.sendspace.com/file/ikuwpv Original appeared on "Cruise Control Mixtape" (2004)
The punchline-heavy battlerap subgenre has always been very prevelant within the Columbus scene. It's not uncommon to hear talented battlerappers making songs all aimed at the same proverbial "wack MC" by playing on words like midgets on Scrabble. (there's an example right there) Fans would often overlook production and mixing flaws for one-liners that would send most rewind buttons to an early grave.
Jakki da Motamouf, a former member of the punchline-heavy MHz, never seemed content with the setup-punchline blueprint and has had a career full of triumphs and failures that can be linked to his tendency to embark on projects that can be classified as "ambitious" and "overambitious." Despite this, he has always sounded most comfortable behind a barrage of puns and similies, allowing the Przm produced "I'm Tryin" to remain one of his strongest singles. Przm's opting for minimalism during Jakki's verses give his punchlines their proper shine, while his ever-building chorus sections allow the song to move forward and gives the beat the same unpredictibility the verses have.
Copywrite (another MHz alumni) is still regarded by some as one of the best punchline MC's. Winner of the Roc-a-Fella Records Roc-the-Mic battle that promised a record deal that never materialized, Copy had made a name for himself dropping showstealing guest appearances on records that ranged from the shocking (out-Smutting the Smut Peddlers) to the truly touching ("June" from RJD2's "Deadringer"). On his last single before Camu Tao began what would become a career-redefining series of ass-whoopings, Przm laced Copy with his trademark thumping electric guitars and beat drops that made Copy's flow sound the most animated and engaging it had been since his MHz days.
And incase anyone doesn't get it, the titled "(O.H.) Ten Times" is a reference to Ohio. "OH10 Times." Get it?
5) SA Smash f/ Cage - "Smash TV" http://www.sendspace.com/file/5j8m2x From "Smashy Trashy" (2003)
6) Illogic - "Don't Go" http://www.sendspace.com/file/1qo3r6 From "Off the Clock EP" (2004)
To end on a personal note, one of my biggest pet peeves on records is when an artist attaches a disruptive and unentertaining skit at the end/beginning of a song without giving it its own seperate track. In this age of CDs and iPods, this should be inexcusable. 99% of rappers are terrible actors, and not a soul ever buys a CD to hear a rapper say anything that doesn't rhyme. Furthermore, not giving these songs their own seperate track eliminates the option to avoid this bullshit. Seriously, rappers, if this shit was really necessary and worthwhile, why not seperate them from the song? Come to think of it, if you aren't being produced by Prince Paul and your name isn't Redman, just DON'T PUT SKITS OVER A MINUTE LONG ON THAT SHIT.
I'm saying this to make a point: Przm is the only producer who attaches skits to tracks that not only serve an important narrative/atmospheric purpose to the record, but remain entertaining and warrant repeated listenings. The skit at the beginning of "Smash TV," the intro from the 2003 SA Smash album "Smashy Trashy" highlights the darkly humorus elements within the otherwise bleak and excess tone of the album. MC's Camu Tao and Metro (as well as Cage in one of his last appearances before beginning the detox that lead to his present "Hell's Winter" persona) lick shots with their tounges firmly in cheek, and Przm's production acts as the only nightlight within the opener's haunted mansion.
Likewise, the studio manager at the end of "Don't Go" (played by Przm himself) solidifies the album's just-for-fun theme. With this, the closer, being the EP's most serious song, Przm's anticlimactic interruption allows the "time is precious" point to be made subtly without being heavy-handed in the least.
Listening to "Don't Go" now, it works as a great ending to this retrospective of Przm's career. While he was taken too soon, "Pyramid knew when his studio time was up." He knew how to undertake a project and play to an artist's strengths without compromising his own. Rest in Peace.Partial IP: 6.41.63.37 |
