completely disagree with this

how is black thought overrated when 1. the average fan probably doesn't even know who he is (that guy from the roots?) and 2. he's had more longevity than almost anyone out there

i think there are some overrated legends out there. thought is not even close to being one of them.

lol at observes description of him as a braggadocio rapper.

BT is dope, but i see cats around here throwing him in their top 5 and top 10 lists which laugh worthy atleast but i really dont get how you could rank him so highly.

he's dropped some very dope verses in his time.

be fair though crow there are only maybe 1 or 2 mcs at the time that song dropped that could have held their own with pun in that format.

that was the perfect format for pun. cats just spitting insane verses back and forth.

bt's verses were by no means weak.

but when you got a cat droppin lines like:

Ay-yo my murderous rap verbal attack is actual fact
Tactical tracks match perfectly with graphical stats
Half a you lack the magical dap of tragical rap

just in the opening 10 seconds of a song its a fuckin wrap. no one is stealin his shine.

the only cats that were lyrically doin shit that could hang with pun at this time (atleast ny cats that he would have worked with) were keith, g rap, and big l maybe. deck didnt outshine him at all. he held his own thats about it.

and like you said, even still those 3 mc's you mentioned woulda probably got outshined by pun in a back to back straight battle style rap song.

it's no shame ever to get outshined by pun at his apex....dude was a lyrical monster.

but also in that format i think it was definitely set to favor pun from the get go.

I give props to Black Thought for being such a versatile rapper, a must if you're in a live instrumentation group such as the Roots. He rhymes genuinely about the streets, can do political talk, and introspective stuff. His live performances are also top knotch. However, I would like to see him drop a solo album, without the backing of the Roots. If that's dope, he is absolved of any form of criticism from me.

ah my mans..I is familiar with those artists..

but to be fair I only listened to the Slightly drawn out "dial the seven digits call up bridget" earlier flow which worked for them cool..but I didn't really enjoy the lyricism too much, I think last I heard from out there was some Keak and that pep love back in the day
who had excellent schemes and flow but I wasn't really into his stuff too much..

I'm an extremist I guess..I don't like sorta soft..I want heartwrenching..and I don't like sorta street I like something that has an authentic street touch too it..situations I been in or described in a way one would only know if they were close to the situation.

I don't think any of them come close to Thought to be honest.

Define technical.

Placement of syllables, amount of syllables that rhyme perfectly, than holding the scheme or jumping it off it entirely and bring it back to reconnect it at unexpected moments..

basically writing potent bars confined to a certain set of parameters..

to me it sounds better..
and it's more difficult.

so I really appreciate it.

"Like brotha lynch hung is technical..he has a song where the beats skips a second on a part, but he manages to spit on that' split second part..that's skills.."

Oh..I grew up on the garden blocc's music. Best believe I loved Lynch and Season of da siccness..to me that was more double time incredible breath control than being technical though.

He isn't?..

Nah, he has some thought provoking lines..almost abstract at times..

Delivery..presence..almost unmatched to me.

and it's not too hard to formulate complex bars over a slower tempo..

doin it over an uptempo joint..

takes skill and patience.

yeah i mean pun is one of the best if not the best rapper of all time so getting outshined by him doesn't matter that much...and black thought's verse on that song is very good i think.

if anything i feel like he's underrated. i completely disagree with you here but not everyone is for everybody.

We defining shit differently.

Straight forward rappers are rappers who don't change up their flow much. Black Thought seems to rap basically the same regardless of the track.

Technical rappers to me have nothing to do with lyrical content. It is about flow. So like Pharoahe Monch is a crazy technical rapper.

Eminem is technical.

Cube has one of my favorite "technical" flows on NWA on Parental Discretion Iz Advised. Cube rips that shit crazy.

But I feel really nerdy talking about this shit right now.

Nerds Up, Thugs Down

We might. Cause to me it's the syllables inside the flow..the parameter inside the flow, Your flow is so heavily dependent on the amount of syllables you're using.

"Run around with the heat, gun was found in the street."

is not going to flow the same as

"Run in the street gun in the street."

One is going to take more finesse and ultimately more time to lay over a track where one can understand what you're saying.

as opposed to some dropping the scheme and just saying "Run around with the heat got guns in the street."

easier to flow, but the scheme was broken and isn't gonna roll like if the scheme was kept.

So these days a proficient technical rappers gonna find a way to stay with it unless he's gonna break away for a bar or two than reconnect it.

"Run around with the heat, gun was found in the street, chump was down off his feet, I bust a round it's discreet, hit the airport clutchin now on the leaf sentiments done when it gets numb so I'm gettin so high I ain't touchin down for a week plus I was just in town for some beef."

or something like that..

doin that over a slow tempo is cake..

uptempo..some parts of that phrase your gonna have to hold out so that you can drop the next part on the beat and vice verse..phrases sometimes will have to be paused or split in half..repetition until the flow is perfect..over and over again..

and say something dope..or profound that people remember..

that to me is a dope lyricist.

WTFFF Black thought has CONSISTENTLY been dropping dope hip hip and classic bars since like 92.....I love Pun but he began falling off by his sophmore album homie. And Biggie was outrapped by Mef on the What Is biggie the most overrated too? I could think of a million examples of all time greats not having the best verse on tracks.
