Can you consider album cover in the ranking? That's going to affect a lot of scores around here, but doesn't really have to do with the music.

Cover - 10 (Just to satisfy my 15/16 year old past self)
Beats for a '95 release - 9
Lyrics - 8
Overall - 9

If it were released today, the numbers would go down a few points for me.

Straight 10's right across the board!

The only thing that I would even slightly consider marking it down for would be the Priest track at the end. It wasn't needed and didn't fit in with the rest of the album. B.I.B.L.E. is a dope track, but don't just tag it on to the end of someone else's album!

Beats are craaaazy on here, RZA was totally unstoppable in '95! He dropped ODB's album in the March, Cuban Linx in August and then Liquid Swords in November!! Crazy output and unbelievable consistency with the high quality of beats! Shame it only lasted a few more years before RZA started to fade.

I'm gunna have to go and through liquid Swords on now! All-time classic album... Cuban Linx and Ironman are just as good if not better IMO though.

just listened to the track on youtube. i might actually be able to edit u-god's hook out of this track. it would sound like a freestyle, but, fuck, it would be better than what it currently is. that beat is probably also the weakest one on the album. that's not saying a lot, since the beats on this album are fire, but coupled with u-god's wack ass hook, this track is undoubtedly the weak link (i'm also not a fan of the hella long skit at the beginning of killa hillz). but i'll have to wait and see what i can do with editing here.

Co-sign it being the weakest beat. It's definitely not a skip track but it's not on the same level as every other beat on the album.

And yeah that fuckin skit before 10304 is lame. Needs a good edit so the track starts when GZA shouts Life of a Drug Dealer!

the weird thing about this album is, when rza released the instro version of it, he left the hooks on. so, for example, with investigative reports, the instrumental version still has u-god's lame ass hook, but just has no verses.

and then with killa hillz, the instro version doesn't have the intro skit, but, for no apparent reason, has gza yell, "life of a drug dealer", before the instro begins. whoever made that video, they must have taken gza's "life of a drug dealer!" statement from the instro version (which removes the background skit noise that overlaps with the statement), and slapped it in front of the beginning of the real song on the vocal version. hmm.

This is the best Wu album of all time.

The skit before Killah Hillz is CLASSIC. We used to listen to that shit all the time. Everyone loved it.

And yes, I like the U-God hook.

Cosign WM, 10's across the board.

My least fav track on it is actually liquid swords. Beats basic/boring and overly repetitive.

Killa hills interlude is annoying with that singing and too long. The beat for the main song isnt great either.

The singing hook on cold world gets redundant and annoying too.

Albums a smash hit doe.

lol

investigative reports is classic and so is killa hills intro and so is priest ending the album with that classic gem

what other artist gave u a great album in 95 and ended it off with the birth of another great star who would later drop one of the best albums of all time? b.i.b.l.e

10's all around

only complaint is the credits are misleading and i feel like a few songs/guests are missing from the album, what happened?

and back to bible, is there any story behind why the kila priest song was a bonus track btw?? feel like theres gotta be a story/reason???

eseph, you idiot. there are no complaints to be had. no questions to be made. the album is, without question, the best album ever made of any genre, ever. it's better than all tv. questioning it won't help us better understand it or clarify and confirm how good it really is. it'll just be a waste of our stupid time. it's the best album and we were fools to judge it, because things other people tell you are classic should never be questioned or judged. never! aaaah!!!

The story from Priest himself, from an interview where he breaks down Heavy Mental track by track...

B.I.B.L.E. (Prod. by 4th Disciple) - The original one was done in RZA's crib, way back. It was Shabaaz the Disciple who put me on to this beat. He was like, "You have to listen to this track." When I heard the track, I was like, "Yo, this is dope." This was the first track that I ever recorded. I was listening to Raekwon. He was doing "Cuban Linx," recording songs and stuff. He was downstairs. I had actually done this song for "Cuban Linx" but I was trying to be on a positive tip. I did some stuff for that. After I did it, they were thinking about letting this one make it. This came across too positive. I said, "Straight-up, I ain't the thug-type." They were like, "This has to be hard." After that session, I went back in and all of a sudden, the track got lost. RZA was like, "I don't know where that track is at." After I got my deal, we still couldn't find "Basic Instructions." 4th came back and redid the track. Everybody loved this song so much. RZA said it was too positive and happy for "Liquid Swords," but GZA was like, "Nah, we're putting it on there." A lot of people don't know that I came in with one of the illest MC's that started up with the Clan. I was amongst RZA and GZA and it was just crazy for me.

We worked on this so many times. We got it mixed here, got it mixed there. A lot of cats were just vibing to it, smoking weed in a studio out in Cali. I got a bad report. The studio called up Geffen Records and said, "There's too much smoking in Priest's sessions. He's a cool dude, but it's the entourage that he brings with him." I had a lot of cats with me when we recorded. After I laid the vocals, it just came out right. I'm one of the first cats to have his whole song featured on another album. That was the first song right there. That was a blessing to do that song. I had that rhyme for a very long time. It was basically about my life.

Best opening intro/track of all time. The eerie intro/sample leading right into the self titled track is amazing. I don't mind the hook on Investigative Reports at all. It's short enough and he doesn't repeat any lines like a lot of annoying hooks do. Blends into each verse nicely. I could see it being annoying on the instrumental version tho.

The album isn't even my favorite Wu album (OB4CL is) and it's still on the Mt. Rushmore of hip hop albums. The dark production, movie clips in sync with the album, and all the Wu members at their peak rhyming. Damn near perfect album. If B.I.B.L.E wasn't the last track id say it would feel out of place but don't mind it as an outro track.

Always luh'd this video growing up...

Let's not forget the video for 4th Chamber/Shadowboxin! I couldn't wait for Wu videos back then.

Liquid Swords, probably my fav Wu album, with Cuban Linx and 36 Chambers. Gza though, I had higher hopes for. In later albums and guest appearances his rhyme style just got kinda lazy to me, either that or I was just in a different mindset by then.

What's the 2nd best Gza album? There were a handful of songs from Beneath the Surface I really liked, but the rest were meh. I can't really even remember Pro Tools or Legend of the Liquid Sword. By the time that Muggs one came out I didn't really care anymore.

^^ I'd probably say the Grandmasters album with Muggs is GZA's second best album. Beats are fire from front to back. Beneath the Surface was ok, a couple of stand out tracks but a lot of filler, same with Legend of the Liquid Sword. Pro Tools was cool.
