i mainly like fahim cause he puts out a lot of raw,ill material and he's a solid rapper and a decent producer with a good ear for samples. i dont get peoples blind/auto hate for him. i like mach hommy cause he has way above average wordplay, vocab, dope unpredictable stimulating flow/rhyme structure. unique and original ass emcee. hes over some peoples heads.

He has one flow and honestly it's not good.

Damn shame they wasted all those beats on a C level rapper.

in what ways? i'm specifically referring to his style of rapping compared to some others. there are some exceptions, but i think the more unconventional his songs are the better. he's good at what he does but his voice and delivery just gets old after a while imo. i've only heard HBO, FYI, the spook, and his dump gawd though.

"nuanced approaches" and "completely different" are contradictory though.

i'm not talking about conceptually either, just saying that i can't really listen to two of his projects back to back. love the best and he's a good lyricist but i'm just kinda over that whole style of rap in general atm.

I find most of the heavy praise to be on here. Mad gassed on this forum I reckon.

Other rap fans I know, say he's aight. Can take him or leave him kinda thing. Hie's still got a humble following. Ain't close to WSG and Conway etc.

I don't mind him. Doesn't exactly blow me away.

Ha, I wanted to make this post myself a few weeks ago. I like the rare samples Fahim and Mach come up with, or whoever is producing them, but I don't find either of their verbal styles, especially Fahim to be very rhythmic or interesting. Even with the good samples, most of the songs I've heard have very repetitive loops, not much layered/complexity, but still I like the samples they find.

I'm not dissing them or the their fans, but I just didn't get it. I'm still going to give both another shot, I just need to get through some other albums first.

He's cool but I've never been hella high on him. I much prefer his straight forward style of rapping as opposed to his at times off beat, unorthodox one. I wish he would rap all the time like he does on here...

^His verse starts at the 5:15 mark.

With that being said Fahim + Mach > WSG + Conway over the past year. Much better duo.

man i hate when people say something is wack and they don't give a single reason why. not specifically going at buckthadevil here, but it's just something i've noticed people doing. it's not like that really benefits anyone, since no one could possibly know why you feel that way. criticism is important but only when it's constructive.

^i hear ya tippi. hard to tell why someones actually trying to discredit an artist. do they just not like the material or is it personal or they dont like the artist as a person? or is it that they are annoyed at the attention/success a certain artist is getting? motives are in question. if its just that they dont like the music/emcee why make a thread about that? making a thread about mach saying you dont like him seems more than you dont like him as an emcee or his output. seems like you mad!

mach getting known though- on some bigger projects this year(new alchemist etc). i can see why hes not for everyone as his style is unorthodox, wordplay can be rapid fire-make you work but not getting how anybody could say hes not dope or talented!

I posted one of his songs and ask someone to explain his verse to me. What is he even talking about? It's mostly incoherent nonsense with a gun reference or something expensive thrown in. I ain't hating just to hate. The dude just has bad form plain and simple . And then he got the gumption to ask for ridiculous amts of money on top. That's not what's up.

for each their own though. i like WSG sometimes.

Just because you don't understand it doesn't mean it's nonsense. That's like saying Aesop Rock sucks if you don't understand him. Maybe you have to be where Mach is from to understand everything

i hate the argument against critics that they just "didn't get it". that's such bullshit. the whole point of good art, compared to bad art, is clarity in intentions. if the critics didn't get it, it means it wasn't clear. even if the unclear message is absolutely profound, it doesn't matter. art is more about the how than the what. in other words, it's more about the clarity of expression than the actual message being expressed.

it's why people like ol' dirty bastard. his "how" is what's good, even though the "what" is stupid or inconsequential.

Mach Hommy rhymes cryptic, lazy and uninspired.

it's more about the clarity of expression than the actual message being expressed.

i agree with what i THINK you're saying here, which is that whole idea that it's not about what you say but how you say it. however, i don't think that just because a few people don't understand the intentions or the message of a piece of art then that means it's bad or the artist failed. it would be so boring if artists only made stuff that they believed was accessible and that every single person would be able to appreciate or understand. in hip hop what i appreciate the most is when a rapper is simply speaking their truth and expressing themselves without pandering and with no regard as to how it will be interpreted. if no one understood a piece of art that would be one thing, but if it's 50/50 then i think the artist succeeded. a lot of the art that i love and consider to be great is pretty polarizing.

I posted up a song where he CLEARLY (Stephen A. Smith voice) came wack. I don't know how else to prove it for you. The beats on HBO are flames. The instrumental version of it would be the bomb cuz the only thing bringing it crashing down is the rapper. Can you honestly sit through more than 20 minutes of this guy? Cmon fam.

And what if the artist's intentions were for not to have everyone get it. If you read/listened to Mach's interviews, he said his lyrics are codified in the vein of slaves having their own esoteric language. How is that aesthetic not good art?

yeah, it's cool to have other stuff going on beneath the surface, but, if the surface level is shit, it doesn't matter how great the deeper stuff is. i'm not referring to mach's music here, btw. just speaking in general terms.

i agree with what i THINK you're saying here, which is that whole idea that it's not about what you say but how you say it. however, i don't think that just because a few people don't understand the intentions or the message of a piece of art then that means it's bad or the artist failed. it would be so boring if artists only made stuff that they believed was accessible and that every single person would be able to appreciate or understand. in hip hop what i appreciate the most is when a rapper is simply speaking their truth and expressing themselves without pandering and with no regard as to how it will be interpreted. if no one understood a piece of art that would be one thing, but if it's 50/50 then i think the artist succeeded. a lot of the art that i love and consider to be great is pretty polarizing.

i understand what you're saying, tippi, and can agree with it. however, i think the hardest, and, therefore, most impressive art to make is the accessible kind. for example, the film, inside out, is far more impressive than a shane carruth film. i mean, do you realize how hard it would be to make the complex world building in inside out understandable to kids? and they pull it off and make it all seem easy and invisible? damn. film writing doesn't get much better than that film.

it's cool to like the niche stuff that isn't as accessible, but, in those cases, the criticisms must be accepted for what they are, rather than dismissed like how loewi's trying to dismiss them itt by implying that the critics are just idiots that don't understand the underlying genius. because making profound stuff happen beneath the surface is actually the easiest part. the hard part is making the surface level work, while tying it to the lower level stuff without making it all seem forced.

WSG has mailed in every single one of his verses the past year. He sounds bored as evidenced by him repeating the same words over and over followed up by repetitive gun noises. It's intolerable for the most part.

Mach a much more listenable rapper currently.
