and none of those female emcees lived up to their potential/hype

that, i think, is because big boi can sometimes lean too much on the fast rap gimmick. whereas andre kept it straight. i wouldn't say big boi's as good as andre. not to say he ain't dope, andre's just one of the special ones.

posted Wednesday, April 11, 2018 5:26:29 PM it feels like rappers that resort to fast rap tend to get completely pigeonholed as fast rappers. as in, the audience suddenly perceives them as being one note - that note being very fast. even now, just thinking in my head of bone thugs, twista, big boi, gift of gab, etc., i immediately think of them rapping crazy fast. as if that's all they had/have.
so i think big boi might sometimes get unfairly, and not even consciously, neglected by fans as being more one note than andre. i mean, you think of andre, you think of his different styles; he could give you a track like return of the g, a track like hey ya, and a track like prototype. he's diverse. whereas, when you think of big boi, you think of him rapping fast on a track.
something about fast rapping seems to consume audience perception, and somehow make it feel like that's all the fast rapping rapper is capable of.
maybe i'm talking out of my ass here. i'm literally just thinking this all out aloud, right now, on the spot.

posted Wednesday, April 11, 2018 7:44:54 PM I think better nominations would be those like K-Rino or even Canibus, Beast1333, guys who can rap their asses off about any topic and say the dopest shit, but sometimes suffer from wack beats to a lot of people so no one really listens. Then, I guess it depends on if you mean underrated on here or in the real world (mainstream).

Killa Sin for sure. I can't recall a sub par verse.

posted Wednesday, April 11, 2018 9:35:20 PM When people attempt to say Big Boi is on the same tier as Andre, that shit is laughable.
Big Boi has done loads of forgettable shit since Andre stopped rapping. Also, you'll be hard pressed to find one song, just one where Big Boi had the better verse than Andre. That is my opinion though.
One day, when Andre opens up the vault, maybe when hes dead or whatever, then the consensus that Andre was the catalyst for all the DF catalog will be cemented.
Hating on Hey Ya is understandable. But the mass crossover appeal alone has to be respected, even on a site like this. Soccer moms in their 40's still sing along to that song.
I listen to The Love Below more than Speakerboxxx. Off that last track alone.

posted Wednesday, April 11, 2018 9:40:55 PM Canibus is also a good one.
People always try to criticize him for lyrical miracling everything. I never understood that criticism.
All of his early work and guest spots, especially the clean up verse he did on Fantastic Four, are cemented in my brain. Also Hell with Monch. He is a top tier jump on someone else's track and rip shit up.
His solos are all hit or miss though besides RTJ. But if you just compiled his 50 best songs and forget all the clutter and stuff he put out, you got an optimal playlist.
His voice is dope also.

posted Wednesday, April 11, 2018 10:30:45 PM What I was getting at with the DOOMStarks and Sin talk was that both projects will never happen.
For Sin, he is just a hooligan and he will never see freedom again. That shit boggles the mind.
I don't know what the hell is going on with the DOOMStarks, but I have a feeling we will never get it. It will be sitting right next to Madvilliany 2 on the what-if lists of hip hop. I stopped getting my hopes up with all that.
Anyone who actually believes Big Boi is superior to Andre... I can't take their opinions seriously. Write them off completely.
