Getting ready to buy a new house here within the next month or two, also found out we're expecting in Nov so that's got me pretty excited. Been putting in a lot of hours to get my money right which has given me a lot of time for music. Few random things I fucked with this last week

Never fucked with these dudes back in the day because of the stigma they had. Randomly picked this up for like $2 though and been riding to it all week. Really dig it. Such a mellow, relaxing album full of well written songs. Excited to dig into their other shit now. More pop/R&B than straight up Hip Hop but I dig it.

One of my favorite current singers. This album is near classic for me. Great front to back with so many styles and sounds.

Probably her best album. Straight up classic. Love Badu but some of her shit is hit or miss for me. This album and the part 1 that came before it are insane though.

just riding around to this one bumping random shit off it. Great selection of tracks here.

really dig Usher's club/dance/super pop shit over his normal R&B stuff. Lot of smooth songs here that are catchy as a motherfucker. Love riding home at night with this playing.

Not yet but I definitely will be here before long. You watch any episodes from that Electric Dreams on amazon 88? There's an episode in there that stars her playing an android lol. She's really committed herself to that whole persona and honestly kinda nails it in the show.

i've been meaning to check that show out, but haven't gotten around to it. i have a few of the episodes PVR'd on my tv, but i realized the other day my gf has amazon prime, so we can just watch it all at her place. i plan on checking it out some time next week.

it's crazy how much janelle stepped it up on the new album (yes, i realize it's been five years since her last album, so a lot's changed -- re: hollywood). hearing dirty computer for the first time immediately reminded me of hearing the weeknd's beauty behind the madness album, where he was all of a sudden this complete pop icon, who had perfectly morphed his previous music stylings into pure pop with laser focus. it's exactly the same on dirty computer. it's the janelle we've known for a decade now, but also some super shredder pop superstar version of her at the same time. she's got straight up pop anthems on her new album, and it's amazing.

this, because i'm reading buddha monk's book about his and odb's experiences with wu and life. pretty good book, recommended to me by seme. appreciate it. haven't listened to this album in a while. it's perfect. there are no fav tracks, because they are all godly.

one thing buddha pointed out about the album cover (and i think i knew this at one point, but forgot it) is that rappers were all about exposing themselves and their brands by putting their faces and voices out there as much as possible, but the wu rejected this by covering their faces up for the cover. that's pretty neato.

i think we idol worship so much that we put "artists" on a pedestal like ther so complex and deep and thers hidden meanings to everything. i think esepecially with rap artists ther out to be heard, but ther more than likely about the money, attn, fame and pussy like most people would be in ther position. im so not the guy who looks at a painting and gives 10 different reasons why a tree sits a certain way or takes an hr to explain why i got certain tattoos. its a bit much

and it's fine if you don't care about an artists intent or you don't think there's any deeper meaning or purpose to any of it, because that's your own interpretation of it.

man i don't understand the correlation you make between comic books and cartoon porn or anime and hentai, instantly turning it into a sexaul thing. i feel like you bring this up most of the time when either of these things are mentioned lol.

i give a legit argument yoda without ne bi polar insanity spewed thruout and u post fireflys. thanks bud. u understand my post isnt a knock on u given that ur a movie critic of sorts and all that, im just saying. with rappers cmon, ther mostly young black dudes. they out for wat i said. fans make up all the bullshit. thats why sites that decipher lyrics are fan made. id like to interview mach hommy or open mike eagle or whoever and see wat THEY say it means. 9 times outta 10. i think u might get a "cuz its fly" answer. how many real artists are in rap dude. and the people making the actual music dont ever get painted with that brush. but i rather be a producer and speak without speaking and have some cuntball answer to why my beat sounds a certain way then to just say it. i dunno

i have this re-occuring day dream wen topics like this come up of being in film school or art school and running down the halls, arms stretched clotheslining everyone in site as i scream to the heavens "i hate it hereeeee" over and over inbetween bring my hands back to my head and covering my ears from hearing some little dipshit ask why i made the film the way i made it.

an artist telling you exactly what they mean is fucking boring though and defeats the whole purpose, it's meant to be open to interpretation. that's why these sites that decipher lyrics are fan made, but you can also find multiple interviews and videos where artists give some insight into their music. i'm sure most artists don't like being bombared with the same questions about the fine details of their music and what every single line is about, but that doesn't mean there's no meaning there. music and art in general affects different people in different ways, you said yourself you don't really pay attention to lyrics as much these days so i get why it would be easy for you to be dismissive about it.

i get your argument that people put artists on pedastals, and tend to see things that aren't there. i think it's different with doom, though. it's impossible not to see that he pulls in a lot of inspirations from all over the place. although i think some of the stuff he's done is genius in how it has a number of layers to it, i don't necessarily always think it's intentional. i do think he's aware of the numerous interpretations, but i think some are probably happy accidents, where he was like, "oh, i didn't mean for it to happen, but those two dots connected perfectly." i mean, he's not only referencing doctor doom's takeover of the world, but also russell gladiator crowe's fall-and-redemption story. all in one mask. he's unifying a number of inspirations behind his intentions. it's great.

anyway, i also don't buy the argument that he doesn't talk about these things in interviews, so that means they're only fan made. the reason i say this is from my own experiences. nobody wants to hear an artist gush about how "deep" their own work is. or to explain it all. doom, from the very beginning of the doom persona has intentionally allowed a level of mystique around him (starting with wearing a sock over his head to cover his face at slam poetry nights in new york -- see: my wu-tang to doom comment that started all this). in other words, a guy that leans towards mystique rather than explanation is obviously not going to show all his cards in an interview. that'd be antithetical to the rest of his behaviour. he's never talked about the movie, gladiator, but considering the fact that he wears the exact same mask from the movie, and the parallels between the stripped down version of the movie's plot (a great warrior is betrayed by his own empire, but then returns, via the underground, to reclaim his dignity and avenge those who wronged him) to the story of doom's rap career, it's hard to argue it's all just a coincidence.

here's another one for your friday afternoon jackoff session, gino:

DOOM's origin story and reason for wearing the mask also parallels the origin story of dr. doom from the marvel comics, except instead of being "disfigured" during an explosion, DOOM was disfigured by the music industry.

there's too many different connections that add up for it to all just be a coincidence, though like 88 mentioned it's definitely possible that some of these connections were made later on and just happened to fit.

samuel beckett talked about how he was a minimalist, because then he could write more subconsciously. like, for example, is it a coincidence that pozzo and godot's names rhyme? or was beckett intentionally offering the possibility that, being the forgetful characters vladimir and estragon were, they just forgot pozzo's name, and thought he was called "godot"?

the beatles always downplayed fan interpretations. they argued that Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds relating to LSD was all a coincidence.

I always dug the WU cover, the masks were worn because as usual not everyone turned up, theres a few good articles about it here is the photographers version:http://www.egotripland.com/making-of-wu-tang-clan-36-chambers-album-cover-photographer-daniel-hastings/2/

"So, anyway, we get a date [to shoot], and I get a Winnebago and we wait for the crew at the Staten Island ferry. We’re expecting [the whole group], but what we get is only like [six] people. It was RZA, ODB, Ghostface, Inspectah Deck, the GZA [and Raekwon]. U-God, Method Man, and Masta Killa did not come for some particular reason. So RZA was like, “Yo, man, we need the whole crew here.” I was like, “This is it. We got to do something because we’re not spending any more money on these guys.” I didn’t know if the Wu-Tang Clan was gonna sell records or not. The executives were like, “We already spent a few thousand dollars on this. Get something.” And I was like, “Yo, what if we do what you guys did [at Jack the Rapper]?” If I didn’t go to Atlanta [and see the Wu-Tang perform], I don’t think the stocking masks [on the cover] would have happened. They were like, “You’re not showing our faces?” I’m like, “Yeah, man, you guys are the Wu-Tang Clan. You’re selling the Wu-Tang Clan. Let’s do this. Let’s get some hoodies, put the logo on there.” They had stickers so they put them on their hoodies. [I was like], “Get some hoodies and then fuckin’ put on the stocking masks, and then we do the cover.” And RZA liked the idea. So we went in and did it. But if I hadn’t gone to Jack the Rapper I wouldn’t have come up with that idea. Because I witnessed it. They weren’t thinking, “Don’t show my face” [on the album cover]. Everybody [in the group] at that point wanted to show their faces. And I remember Funkmaster Flex when the album came out, he was like, “Yo man, you all dudes look so ill with this cover.” And after that, I shot like a zillion album covers."

with DOOM I always thought it was a result of where he was mentally after all the issues due to Subrocs passing. He suffered from depression for several years afterwards and in that period he was dropped by Elektra, was pretty much homeless sleeping rough on benches etc. I think he wore a stocking when he first came back into music, the mask came a bit later. I didn't think there was a connection to Gladiator it just happened to be the same mask.

Cool I liked the Buddha monk insights to the WU its a short book but full of great stories

DOOM is an interesting character, I am glad him and Grimm squashed their beef

DOOM fanboys are so annoying, its like he is god and if you don't spell it in all caps they get so mad....

Subroc dying at 19 crossing the Long Island Expressway...DOOM having to finish up Black Bastards by himself...at Subrocs wake DOOM set up a boombox right next to the casket and played the whole album from start to finish....he was an angry person at that point. Terri Rossi basically blackballing the LP without even listening to it just based on the cover even though they had used the sambo image already starting way back in 89', drawn by DOOM. But they did give him the masters as they wanted to be rid of it, walking away money and release from his contract thanks to Dante Rosss it turned out to DOOM's advantage in the end.

That album is crazy, MF Grimm got shot up the day after he recorded the What A N*gga Know remix....a lot of shit swirled around that release

DOOM and Subroc were devout muslims on their first release living pretty straight lives, by their second they were heavily into psychedelic drugs and drinking. It is thought Subroc was on a bad acid trip and spaced out when he crossed the road....

Doom is an interesting character....MF Grimm has just as colorful life as well....plenty of drama around both
