I don't understand why these dudes decided to press wack cdr copies and limited vinyl copies of a quality album like "aguardiente" instead of approaching a proper independent label/distributor like fat beats ... just a few heads will be able to get it, most of the edition will be bought by resellers who hope to make a quick buck with it ... maybe, they give a fuck about fans who still buy physicals because they sell quite a few thousands of digital units lol...

to further that most of these guys (especially gunn/conway) def get off on jerk off fans fighting over ther limited releases and taking out 2nd mortgages to buy them off other jerkoff fans cuz it further inflates ther already over blown ego. of course ur shit is rare wen u only press 150 copies not cuz ther was 1000 or 2000 and ur shit went oop like actual real rare stuff.

yeah, I agree...

...another question is if guys like wsg, conway or crimeapple would be able to sell 2000 or 3000 physical copies of an albums at all? or is their fanbase limited to a few hundred guys?

im pretty positive gunn and conway could press 2000-5000 of something and they would almost all get scooped but the rest of these guys prolly not. 1000 would work i think tho.

i agree with most of the sentiment of this thread, hypebeastin in hiphop, especially merch ...is lame af, and has made the physical buyers feel it corny now to collect.

i'm so sick of the "only 50 made" "only 20 made" shit it's making me wanna quit the game real talk. shit is super lame already and i wish it would end. but like someone previously said, it's not like they could sell 500 or 1000 anyway, so make it psuedo-limited and watch the people thirst for it.

Labels like Daupe and Gourmet Deluxxe have a dedicated consumer base and know they can sell out their limited releases so they can afford to offer good money to an indie artist to press it. By their estimation, it's a win win, everyone will get paid decent. It sucks for the average fan, but the reality is, if you try to press through a distributor that's a bit less hands on, chances of you being treated like a priority are slimmer and the chances of you sitting for a bit are higher. Also, you've gotta consider what a label / distributor is willing to do for you. They may be interested in being able to move a certain amount of units that despite the high demand for a limited release earns you, you may not be able to meet. Not sure what the practice is for a label like Fat Beats but I know historically, going through labels you deal with an advance that you have to recoup. I'm not sure if the demand is quite there. You might end up making the same or better money through the smaller label pressings. They're less of a risk because they are set in their niche markets and the turnaround to a non-recoupable payment will likely be WAY quicker. If you're eating off of this, you need to take the best deal anyone is offering. You can say what you want about Daupe, but they are hands on and turn around a product on a regular basis.

Lex, i hear that, but Daupe peddels in faux-exclusivity. they sell 250 records to 300 people. hypebeast sales tactics applied to music doesn't make it ok. it's a gimmick and doesn't have any real merit. times have changed, but selling 250 vinyls back when meant you was a flop. not to mention you made zero dollars.

Also, how can any artists make any type of income off a CD that's only a run of 50? like how much scratch are they really taking in?

I'm not saying they don't have any shady business practices. I really wouldn't know first hand. What I'm saying is it makes sense from an artist's perspective financially. It also makes sense to put a stronghold on your demand. Sure they can probably sell a bit more than they do, but the rarity of the product creates a mystique where you are outselling your fanbase. You take that away, it might not do as well (at least immediately).

LEX, "mystique" and "limited" are psychological marketing strategies, it works, on a small scale, but small-scale is exactly the arena.

how much you think these artists make on a run of 100 CD's or 250 vinyl pieces?

Seme_one, really no theory. W$G perfect example. they press "250", yet there are copies unnumbered, and some are just plain and dont even have the square sticker on them, so that's obvious that there are more than the stated press run. W$G also dry-snitched by posting selfie-vids rummaging thru his closet showing off, as usual, but had stacks of unnumbered Daupe vinyl (i've said this before) he had about 25+ FLYGODS and 25+ Hitler IV's (after they were "sold out") sitting in boxes in mint shape. still not getting it? Daupe is known to press more than advertised to give some to people/friends/whoever...this is known. they have also been exposed of shady practices before, not by me, do some research.

I feel you. But I'm looking at this from the artist's perspective moreso than the label. If you're gonna pay me a couple of racks to put some shit out with my face on it and only make a couple racks yourself, I could go for the quick low risk buck. IDK how much they pay but I would love to get another Chopped Herring release right about now.

Yeah, I am done with the "limited" shit. I'd rather buy an old rare classic than buy something that is "rare" as soon as it releases. I am a huge collector of hip hop, especially CDs, but these new cats can't get my support with these scarcity tactics.

Only way Griselda would sell 2000 copies of anything in a short amount of time is if they had the Em hype machine behind the release. I mean Em Tweeting about them, not just that they're on Shady.

Thank god I cant stand that lil bitch voiced Westside Cum Stain and I dont care for most Daupe releases because that label is fuckin nothin but bitchmade fgts. They are a scam, PERIOD!! And thankfully I dont care for that Crimeapple album aside for 1 or 2 songs. Not a fan of an album where just about every song is in the 70bpm range, or very low 80s. I think I only own 4 Daupe releases... Hus Kingpin, The Purist (2 albums) and A-Villa. None of which are that great anyways. Oh I got 2 of the 7inch singles as well... The Purist ft. Action Bronson and another Purist.

Was hoping to get a high quality copy of this album and even if I got the vinyl it'll sound not so hot bc its a picture disc. It's good marketing though I guess.

^ all tracks got drums, but on a few like "marcel adams", the drums are not dominant ... bpm also show a good range ... the "perfect" ep's sound more polished than "metralleta", buck dudley's beats are not as dark/slow as big ghost's beats on "aguardiente"...

imo, crime's one of the best emcees of his generation, and he has a god ear for beats...

Just went back and skimmed through Aguardiente and Metralleta and overall wasn't feelin them. I did listen to them in the past. Aguardiente had like 2 joints (maaaaybe 3) I liked and would spin and Metralleta had like 1 joint. *shrugs*

Crimeapple is dope though.

I think I get what wicked22 is sayin' ... if you just look at the tracks from a dj perspective, they must fit to your concept of spinning ... and for real dj's, it's much more than just the bpm, they also take a look at the programming of the drum break, how can you manipulate the beat, if there's a nice break or vocals to create a beat juggle etc. ... dj's usually don't give a fuck about the emcee skills ... but if you just estimate crimeapple's releases as rap music, you have to agree that most of his output is on par with the best shit nowadays...

why should crimeapple reply to fahim? no need to do so since fahim is rather an amateur level rapper and an eccentric sociopath who's alright in small doses at most ... he just appeals to a bunch of fags who fell victim to his marketing strategies and think they get something special when they buy his overpriced releases...
