i was just listening to some of tribes "the love movement" and literally the last thing i think of wen i hear 1998 is a tribe called quest, they should have put ther careers to bed in 1994. and unless ther doing solo stuff (ali or tip) which is barely hip hop to me ther permanently cemented in 1990 somethin and arent exactly timeless. where as de la soul changed with the times and literally put out an album in every era and progressed tremendously. like rap chameleons pretty much. most progressive group of all time de la soul and nobody has ever even come close. i mean seriously if q tip is such a genius tribe woulda had a de la type run far into the 2000's but hes such a diva and not a genius that they didnt. his solo stuff is hardly even rap and same with ali and lucy fucking pearl. and phife cant stand alone as a solo rapper either, sorry. de la soul>>>>>>>>>>tribe and its not even close. but im not taking away the fact that tribe struck lightning in a bottle with ther first 3 albums but they couldnt do wat de la did and its cuz of tip and the fact that none can stand alone as pure hip hop as solo artists and sell.

Lol youre basically saying Tribe > De la.

De la wished they coulda done half of what tribe did.

Agree. De la have the more creative, outside the box, experimental production and songs and they said more. Tribe got progressively less creative after their first album. Every album was less creative and raw consistently till love movement. Tribe was the easier, more straight forward listsen and de la was breaking ground, production wise until stakes is high. De la has more dope projects too. De la also broke ground with humour, unique song structure, content, skits, being positive and having a message without preaching. Masters of sneaking in that substance. Plus posdnous is a masterful poet.

Ya except two years ago Tribe dropped an album that was way better than the one De La released that same year. So no.

i love both tribe and de la equally but i agree that de la has the stronger body of work overall. we got it from here... > and the anonymous nobody though imo. tribe did update their sound, it was just 18 years later lol.

Arguments can be made for both sides, but clearly DLS's body of work was more present & consistent. Their legacy was cemented in being able to sustain a group over the years where Tribe could not. I think I am a slightly bigger fan of Tribe. My favorite 3 album stretch of theirs was actually L.E.T., M.M. & B.R.&L. But I absolutely loved We Got it From Here. That said, I can't necessarily say they have a better discography than De La. It's not as deep. And despite me liking the aesthetic of Tip and Phife's rhymes better, Pos and Dave are clearly superior MCs IMO. As lyricists they don't get nearly the props they deserve. You'd be hard pressed to find rappers with more creativity. For me Tribe is my favorite group of all time but De La is not far behind at all.

Stop the madness.

Tribe has the better albums hands down.

Their last album was better than anything de la’s done in the last 15 years.

internet rule #743: whenever someone posts a thread titled "you can't compare X to Y", they will then write a big essay doing exactly that.

ironically I can't think of many other nineties hip hop groups that are *more* comparable, in just about every respect.

When tribe is talked about I never understood why people say things like "they should have put their careers to bed in 94?". I mean, Beats, Rhymes & Life is a dope album. It never gets mentioned as a great album because Tribes first 3 albums are bonified classics? Thats a shame. BR&L is a classic to me ***Shrugs***. I might be bias as Tribe is my fav group of all time but I have always felt BR&L has been overlooked. For the record De La is also one of my fav groups and I honestly hate the comparison between the two groups. The only thing they have in common is that they are part of the Native Tongue movement.

moodz I think that's a legit opinion based on the fact they fell off a bit at the beats, rhymes, life era

I feel they did and I've always been a pretty big tribe fan

I don't think it was the addition of the ummah

it was the chemistry between Tip and Phife and the addition of Consequence to try to force him into the Phife spot

This was all before the internet and info about the inner beefs and I could still feel all that as a listener

I still liked the music but it was more hit or miss as opposed to the old shit plus Consequence is a fag

I would trade Tribe's entire existence for 10 demo songs lost in the Wu flood.

Id trade both of these groups ever existing for those Method Man and Deck albums that got lost in the flood.
