album is incredible. billy woods has been so consistent that i've gotten skeptical thinking he'll eventually slip up one day like DOOM and drop a sub-par release but that day hasn't come yet. woods x segal works just as well as woods x blockhead. only two listens in but some early highlights for me are that three track stretch from "spider hole" -> "a day in a week in a year" and crawlspace w/ elucid, when that beat switched i felt my soul leave my body for a quick second.

Tippi, I've only listened to him since Dour Candy. What are his earlier solos like?

If you had to order his albums including armand hammer and super chron bros releases how would it look?

Dour Candy is still his best I've heard

dour candy is still my favorite as well, if i had to rank his discography right now it would probably look something like this

Dour Candy
Paraffin
History Will Absolve Me (you need to hear this one)
Race Music
Rome
Cape Verde
Today, I Wrote Nothing
Known Unknowns
Furtive Movements
Half Measures
Emergency Powers
The Chalice
Indonesia
Terror Firma (Reavers album)
Camoflague

Hiding Places would probably be somewhere between paraffin and today, i wrote nothing, too early to say though

u crazy man, to me, he's the best lex!!

him and sandman, those been my favorites of the emcee's to drop post 2000.

best 2 emcee's in the whole sheittt!

put em up there with the greats

^^^emergency powers!!!!!!!!!!

here's what got me into woods if you haven't heard it lex peep this it is the best album from 2007 that barely anyone knew about

this debut super chron flight bros album with priviledge was my favorite. the way they played off each other was like rae and ghost. didn't hurt that they had a trife diesel feature on one of their best songs on there and a beat from doom on the first single. see to me, they just had such a wu influenced vibe with the most unique slang vocabulary. been a fan ever since.

he put me on to greats like marq spekt, karniege, vordul (ironically woods was put on by him), priviledge, elucid, henry canyons, prem rock, curly castro, zilla rocca, junclassic

producers like bond, nasa, willie green, axis360, am breakups, etc..

just a lot of good music by true Hip Hop heads like ourselves

maybe try peeping one of his shows sometime. i remember one time like 4-5 years ago him and ka had a show together and i believe junk science performed as well. that would've made my life fr fr

BAM!

emergency powers cd $8 brand new straight from the source

go cop one of eseph's favorite albums of all time and thank me later

talking to everybody on here who never listened to the whole album. (best two songs is the last track right into the bonus track btw) but you'll only truly appreciate them if you bump it all the way through

fucking classic

still my favorite song of the year.

3 of the best to do it on an amazing "raw produce-esque" beat from blockhead

Primarily, I don't fuck with the production. It's more noisy than soulful to me. The only emotion it tends to invoke in me is to skip.

^^why do you two follow each other through threads talking shit to each other? Super weird and kind of annoying.

Finished listening to it. A day in a month is my favorite track right now. Something about the beat and the chorus click for me. Plus Billy's lyricism is on point in that track

"ALBUM OF THE YEAR - YOU HEARD IT HERE FIRST"

this shit is incredible though, i listened to it probably a dozen times over the weekend and it grew on me more each time, especially after i was able to read the lyrics. woods is such a good writer man, there's really no one else that can balance that stark subject matter & paranoia with humor and have it come across as completely natural. i can't think of another rapper that tells stories the way he does. what's interesting to me too, is that a lot of these tracks feel like snapshots of a specific moments in a story. you might not get the full story in chronological order, but it's the delivery, word choice, and the specificity of these moments that give what he's saying weight and makes it convincing.

kenny segal is one of the best producers out there right now too, he seems to always tailor his beats to fit the rapper he's working with. in a recent interview with billy woods where he talks about the process for this album he said "With Kenny it was like, “Here’s a pack of beats, you better pore over them and find some that are gonna work” because there’s not gonna be another pack for a little while. Once we started working, there was actually a point at which he was like “Don’t use any of those other beats I sent in the beginning… I’m doing new stuff, I know where we’re going now.” He needed to see where I was going and go off of that."

so a lot of these beats were made specifically for woods and it shows. that's how it should be with all these rapper/producer collabs.

Gave this 2 spins, damn dope and interesting record. There were like 2 beats I didnt enjoy much iirc, but the rest was all A+ stuff, and they might grow on me.

That 2nd beat on the track with Elucid

I just cant get into the beats of "Checkpoints" and "Speak Gently" on this. Too noisy and annoying to me. Beside that, this shit is insanely good.

Like 6 months ago i had never heard of this dude, or Armand Hammer. Now i got all their shit on repeat. Billy might be my favorite rapper at the moment, aint gonna lie.

damn kingetje, i can understand not liking the production on speak gently, but checkpoints? that track is crazy to me. been playing this album twice a day since it dropped and it's grown on me with each listen, probably my favorite solo project since dour candy and i think it might even surpass it with time.

vinyl finally arrived yesterday, love that alternate artwork

"tippi you didnt really like known unknowns and today i wrote nothing?"

nah i really like both of those albums, i just think hiding places is on another level. woods is more personal & honest than he's ever been before and i love how layered and detailed kenny's beats are + the variety in sound. i think the runtime is a huge factor too, this album is concise with no filler whatsoever which adds to the replay value. today i wrote nothing and known unknowns are so god damn long.

rolo - i got it off the backwoodz website, that version is sold out but the black vinyl w the william livingstone house on the cover is still available

i can dig that tip.

yeah im glad this tape isn't too long. ive already bumped it like 10 times in the hip hop garage.

def a great cohesive 1 mc 1 producer album and doesn't hurt that ks is the producer cuz i know you are a big fan of him too

i really wish bond would make beats for woods again but oh well, you know how i feel about emergency powers. i was just happy to hear woods talk about bond in that dope interview. it means that bond isn't dead to him like priviledge is

too many cool covers for this. i love the tape one i got the best, personally. got the early-mid? 1900's halloween mask pic and weird pic of white women with black beast at her bedside the inside of the cover lol

the cd one looks crazy on some mach fahim red riding hood meets the witch ishj (black phillip?)

and the house one is ridic! (my wallpaper on my work computer lol)

your's looks like that one quasimoto cover and that vinyl is sick! woods looks like a yellowman version of jesus on southpark lol at dew-tip

yeah the house cover might still be my favorite especially because of the history behind the house and how it might relate to some of the themes on the album

i like the cd art a lot though, i think toothy is one of the best tracks on the album

back cover of the one i got is cool too

+ the art for the vinyl insert
