is it necessary to rip them at 24 bit?
since FLAC is already lossless, does it really make a difference, or am i just using up additional memory for nothing?

CD's have a data rate of 44.1khz/16 bit. So your flac files not gonna be lossless, cause it wasn't lossless to begin with. There's no point at upping to 24 bit, cause you can't really recover what's already been lost from the CD. Keep it at 16.

thanks. so why is i-tunes advertising 24 bit downloads as opposed to Amazon's 16 bit? just a marketing ploy?

24 bit is good if you the original is in 24. But since you're ripping from a CD, which is already shrunk to 16 bit, going back to 24 is not really going to do anything, cause you can't recover those missing bits anymore once they're gone.

Think of it this way, if you have a 1 pound steak(16 bit) and put in a blender(file converter) and it adds a bunch of air to it, the mush(24 bit) that comes out might be bigger(file size), but it's still only one pound, since that's what you started with, it just fluffed up.
