One of my all time favourite hip hop albums. The beats are dope, even on the interludes. The guests all come correct; KRS-One provided one of his best verses ever, imo. Lord Finesse's lyrics are great as always. His punchlines and metaphors are all dope, and pretty hilarious, at times. This album also has one of my all time favourite posse cuts, Actual Facts, as seen below. If you, for some unexplainable reason, haven't come across this album yet in your life, go get it immediately; it's a masterpiece (imo...).
^^^KRS-One at his absolute best on this one. Back when he still had the boom in his voice that he doesn't seem to have anymore, and when his lyrics were looser and not all about how Godly he is, like they are today.

posted Thursday, June 21, 2012 7:58:45 PM i always thought it was weird how finesse put out this album - titling it the awakening, mind you - and then never put out another album. sure, he continued to produce and rap a bit, but it just seemed weird to me that he'd put out such a great album, and then stop putting out albums. maybe he wanted to end on a high note. but it's ironic that he'd call it the awakening - to me, at least.

posted Friday, June 22, 2012 12:15:14 PM yeah, this album rarely gets mentioned, when people are listing off the top albums of '96. i think it deserves more credit than that, though, but that's just me. i've never heard that from the crates to the files compilation.
food for thought's a really dope track. for most of the album, finesse is just having fun bragging, making joke punchlines, and talking about ladies, but on food for thought, he gets serious. always liked that about the track; kind of balances out the album and gives it more depth.
time to get ill!/yo, y'all better chill

posted Friday, June 22, 2012 12:48:39 PM wasent this an EP? but yeah, Finesse's rhyme style kind of sounded dated even in '96 when this came out. not that it was bad thing, he just had that throwback simplistic flow with the way he delivered his punchlines.

posted Friday, June 22, 2012 1:18:26 PM yeah, there's a lot of skits, but i didn't include most of them, when i added the album to itunes...
i always thought that lord finesse's rhyme styles was one of the things that made the album so unique and enduring. and the beats are great to me. i guess others see it differently. it's whatever though.

posted Friday, June 22, 2012 2:06:53 PM i guess i just never really think of when it came out, when i'm listening to it, and don't really ever compare it to anything else of the time. just kind of enjoy it for what it is, and ignore all the factors of the time that could have affected it.
